Sports Engineering Research Group

The centre's work is based on four research disciplines:

  1. applied computing
  2. biomechanics
  3. design engineering
  4. skill acquisition

In each area, researchers develop fundamental knowledge and deliver applied solutions to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury and promote physical activity.

CSER works in partnership with many sport, health and commercial organisations, including Team GB Olympic, and Paralympic athletes, and they have research partnerships with global organisations such as the International Tennis Federation, FIFA, and Adidas.

The centre was first established in 1996 by Professor Steve Haake in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield, where the foundations were laid for developing sports engineering as a field of academic study by organising the first Engineering of Sport conference and establishing the International Sports Engineering Association.
